Spinal Injections and Minimally Invasive Procedures

Spinal injections and minimally invasive procedures are an excellent method of treating chronic pain. Check out the the following and call for more information.

Epidural Spinal Injection

Epidural Steroid Injection is an injection of the long lasting steroid, cortisone, in the Epidural space, which is the area surrounding the spinal cord and the nerves.

Transforaminal Epidural Injection

Transforaminal epidural steroid injections relieve back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, and arm pain caused by pinched nerves in the spine. They can be used to treat herniated discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica and radiculopathy.

Median Branch Nerve Blocks

Median branch nerves are small nerves that feed out from the facet joints in the spine, and therefore carry pain signals from those joints. A median branch nerve block temporarily interrupts the pain signal being carried by the medial branch nerves.

Facet Joint Blocks

A facet joint injection is an injection in which a doctor will pass a needle to the facet joint. The needle is inserted to the joint and a small amount of lidocaine or another anesthetic agent is introduced, along with an anti-inflammatory medication. The anti-inflammatory medication cuts the inflammatory process and decreases pain.

Diagnostic Lumbar Discogram

Lumbar discography is an injection technique used to evaluate patients with back pain who have not responded to nonsurgical care regimens. The most common use of discography is for surgical planning prior to a lumbar fusion.

Disc Fx

DiscFX is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which contained herniated disc material is removed and radiofrequency thermal energy is used to treat the annual tears of the disc. I

Radiofrequency Ablations- RFA

A lumbar radiofrequency neurotomy (or radiofrequency ablation) is a minimally invasive procedure that reduces or eliminates the pain from damaged facet or sacroiliac joints by disrupting the medial branch nerves or sensory nerves that carry pain signals. This animated video provides a clear picture of a lumbar radiofrequency neurotomy.

Sympathetic Blocks

Sympathetic block is an injection of local anesthetic into or around the sympathetic nerves. Normally these nerves control basic functions like regulating blood flow. In certain conditions, these sympathetic nerves can carry too many pain signals from the peripheral tissues to the spinal cord leading to the development of uncontrolled neuropathic pain also called as RSD, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy or CRPS

SI Joint Blocks
The primary reason for sacroiliac joint injections is to determine whether or not the sacroiliac joint is the cause of the patient's pain. It is also useful in providing immediate pain relief. As part of the injection, an anesthetic is typically injected along with an anti-inflammatory medication to help reduce inflammation around a joint, which in turn, will help alleviate the pain. The immediate pain relief can help the patient start with a physical therapy program and return to normal activity levels.

Peripheral Joint/Nerve Blocks

Sensory nerves are small nerves that feed the various joints in out body and they carry pain signals from those joints. Joint injections are often used to identify the pain source and are also used to provide for longer term pain relief.

Stryker® Disc Dekompressor® Discectomy

This is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to treat a herniated disc. Removing the disc bulge or herniation can relieve pressure on the nerves relieving low back pain

Trigger Points

A trigger point injection is an in office procedure designed to reduce or relieve the pain caused by myofascial trigger points.  Massage therapy helps to find localized painful trigger points that can be easily identified and injected with anesthetic pain medication with or without the addition of steriod medication.

Spinal Cord Stimulator

A Spinal Cord Stimulator or Dorsal Column Stimulator is a type of minimally invasive procedure where implantable neuromodulation device that is used to send minute electrical signals to select areas of the spinal cord to treatment chronic pain conditions especially, chronic low back pain, failed surgeries.  Patient gets to experience the therapy and pain relief for a week or more before making a decision to get the device implanted.
