Spinal Injections and Minimally Invasive Procedures

Spinal injections and minimally invasive procedures are an excellent method to treat acute or chronic pain. Following are the common procedures offered

Epidural Steroid Injection
Nerve Root Block Injection
Epidurals and nerve block injections consist of administering long-acting steroid medication close to the pain generator. Commonly performed for low back pain and sciatica using a mobile X-ray machine.
Facet Joint Block
Radiofrequency Ablation- RFA

Median branch nerve block with a small amount of lidocaine with or without a steroid medication temporarily interrupts the pain signal that is being carried by these nerves from the facet joints. Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that reduces the pain by temporarily destroying these nerves with the use of thermal energy.

Diagnostic Lumbar Discogram

On the MRI, the disks can be appearing normal, bulging or herniated.  Lumbar discography is an injection technique used to find out if a particular disk is causing the pain.

The injections test is performed under sedation using a mobile X-ray machine followed my a confirmatory CT scan.  It helps to decide in choosing the treatment options and also helps with prognosis.

Disc Fx and Stryker Decompressor

These are minimally invasive surgical procedures in which a contained disc herniation is treated by partially removing the disc material and also seal the annual tear using radiofrequency thermal energy. Commonly used to treat a leaky disc that was found on Discography.

Sacro-Iliac Joint (SI) Block

An SI joint injection is an injection to the sacroiliac joint. A small amount of lidocaine with or without a steroid medication is injected to decreases inflammation, pain and improve mobility

Spinal Cord Stimulator - Trial and Implant

It is a minimally invasive procedure where a thin lead wire is temporarily inserted into the epidural space to send electrical signals to the spinal cord to treat chronic pain.  If satisfactory pain relief is obtained a permanent device is implanted under the skin by a minimally invasive surgical procedure. The patient also receives a remote control to use to get on-demand pain relief.

Peripheral Nerve Stimulator - Trial and Implant

It is a minimally invasive procedure where a thin lead wire is temporarily inserted near the nerve that is causing the pain and send electrical signals to the spinal cord to treat the chronic pain condition.  If satisfactory pain relief is obtained a permanent device is implanted under the skin by a minimally invasive surgical procedure.  The patient also receives a remote control to use to get on-demand pain relief.

Spinal Decompression - Vertiflex

It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed using a mobile X-ray machine wherein a small implant is placed between the spinous processes treat spinal stenosis causing neurogenic claudication pain.

Intrathecal Pump - Trial and Implant

It is a minimally invasive procedure where a small amount of medication like Morphine is temporarily injected into the intrathecal space to treat chronic pain.  If satisfactory pain relief is obtained a permanent pump is implanted under the skin by a minimally invasive surgical procedure.  The patient receives a pump refill once in a few months and also receives a remote control for on-demand pain relief.

Joint/Nerve Blocks/Trigger Point

Sensory nerves are small nerves that feed the various parts in our body and they carry pain signals. Joint injections, trigger point injections, and nerve blocks are often used at the source of the pain.

A local anesthetic with or without a steroid medication is injected to provide pain relief.

Compression Fracture - Kyphoplasty

It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed using a mobile X-ray machine wherein bone cement is injected into the vertebral segment to treat pain from compression fractures

SI Joint Fusion - Cornerloc

It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed using a mobile X-ray machine wherein a small implant is placed into the SI joint to fuse the joint and relief pain
